Hex and the Cursed Crewneck
Every item Hex sells comes with a curse. One of them was real.
Hex's table at the Midnight Market is the one with the velvet rope, the hand-painted warning signs, and the incense that smells like a thrift store having a nightmare. Every item on it is cursed. He guarantees this in writing. The certificate of curse comes free with purchase, printed on paper that feels slightly damp no matter what you do, which is itself one of Hex's better curses.
The curses, historically, are glitter. Let's be honest about that up front, because Hex never will. The 'Hexed Beanie of Eternal Bad Hair' is a nice beanie with glitter in it. The 'Doomed Socks of Minor Inconvenience' are good socks; the glitter is in the toes. Buyers know. Hex knows they know. It's theater, and it's the best theater at the market, and his stall sells out during all seven minutes, every night, because a nice crewneck is a nice crewneck but a CURSED crewneck is a story.
Which brings us to the crewneck.
It came in with a bulk lot from the factory's irregulars pile — pieces with crooked prints or double-stitched hems, the charming rejects Hex resells as 'pre-cursed at the source.' Purple body, lime XX smiley, drip running the correct direction. Hex wrote it a certificate ('CURSE OF THE UNRELIABLE SLEEVE: one sleeve will always be slightly colder. No refunds.') and put it on the table at 12:00 sharp.
At 12:02 it sold to a regular — a quiet kid named Marisol who collected Hex's certificates the way other people collect the merch. At 12:04 she was back, which had never happened. Nobody returns to Hex's table during the seven minutes. There isn't TIME. She put the crewneck down gently, like it was sleeping, and said: 'It's doing the thing. From the certificate. My left sleeve is cold.'
Hex laughed. Hex explained the theater, breaking character for the first recorded time, actually apologizing — the glitter, the damp paper, the whole bit. Marisol nodded along. Then she put the crewneck back on, and Hex watched, in the middle of his own explanation, as the left sleeve developed frost.
The investigation lasted three market nights. Dice was brought in as a probability consultant and rolled himself seventeen times next to the crewneck; he landed on numbers that don't exist four separate times, which he described, gambling professional that he is, as 'new.' The certificate was examined. And there the mystery folded itself neatly in half: the words on the damp paper were in Hex's handwriting, but the SIGNATURE — the little flourish Hex puts at the bottom of every curse — had two X's over it. Hex does not sign with two X's. Hex, suddenly needing to sit down, remembered writing that certificate at 11:58, at the crowded staging table, next to a stack of blank paper that everyone at the market uses. Anyone could have touched that stack. Anyone at all.
Somebody, somewhere between 11:58 and midnight, had countersigned his joke. And the joke had listened.
Here's what Hex did about it, and it's why the crew loves him: nothing. No panic, no exorcism, no lengthy investigation into which unseen founder of which apparel company may or may not walk his own market unrecognized. He simply walked to his table the next night, took out a fresh certificate, and wrote the truest thing he's ever written: 'THIS ONE'S REAL. PROBABLY. CURSES SOLD AS-IS.' Then he raised his prices.
Marisol kept the crewneck, obviously. She reports that the cold sleeve is actually excellent — a built-in cool side of the pillow, but wearable. She's asked Hex if he can do the other sleeve. Hex has explained, with dignity, that he doesn't know how he did the first one. She's asked if he can find out. Hex has been at the staging table every night since at 11:58, writing certificates next to the blank paper, leaving a pen out, just in case.
The pen has moved twice. Hex doesn't talk about it. But his table has a new sign, small, hand-painted, at the very end of the velvet rope, and if you know, you know:
"CO-SIGNED CURSES: PRICE ON REQUEST. INQUIRE NEVER."
