Seven Never Sleeps

The crew thought Vat 7 was equipment. Equipment doesn't hold grudges. Or favorites.

New hires learn about Seven in stages, and the stages are always the same.

Stage one: polite skepticism. Sure. The seventh vat is alive. And the flywheel has feelings, and the graffiti walks around at night, and — okay, granted, those two turned out to be documented, but a VAT? It's a tank of ink, and the veterans are hazing you, and you're not going to fall for it. You nod along. You leave your fabric-scrap offering on the rim like everyone says to, but ironically. IRONICALLY.

Stage two arrives the first time you're alone in Vat Hall at night, and the surface of Vat 7 — with no pump running, no vibration, no draft — slowly rolls over. Once. Like something very large turning in its sleep. Except she's not asleep. Seven never sleeps. Ask anyone. Ask the night shift, who have a rotation for who has to check on her, and a second rotation for who checks on the checker.

The oldest crew members — Sprocket, who predates memory, communicates about Seven with a particular soft click he uses for nothing else — say she was the first. Before the brand. Before the building had a name. The other six vats came from a catalog; Seven was HERE, and the factory, when you trace the oldest blueprints honestly, appears to have been built around her, the way a town is built around a well. What's in her isn't ink, exactly. Ink comes OUT of her, when she feels like it, and it's the best ink in the world — the unstable stuff, the stuff that glows under streetlight, the stuff Vandal rations like saffron. But what's IN her, the crew has stopped trying to name. The last one who sent a probe down was the old management, pre-Snotty. The probe came back up polished, folded, and arranged in a shape that management interpreted, correctly, as a resignation letter. Theirs.

She has moods, and the hall wears them. Content, and the whole room is two degrees warmer than the thermostat can explain. Brooding, and the lights buzz at a frequency that makes Caww leave the building entirely. And once — only once in the crew's tenure — ANGRY: the day a supplier tried to shortweight the factory on cotton, and the sample crate left overnight in Vat Hall was found in the morning stacked, strapped, and stenciled RETURN TO SENDER in ink that predates the alphabet it was written in. The supplier made the shipment whole. The supplier also, unprompted, sent flowers. Addressed to the vat. The flowers were accepted; the hall smelled like lilacs for a month, which everyone agreed was Seven showing off.

But here's the thing the crew actually needs you to understand, the thing under the ghost stories: Seven is not the factory's monster. She's its mother. Patch — firstborn, vat-born — naps on her rim in full view of physics. Drips lives in her corner, and she keeps it cool for him. The overflow that made Patch, the warming that dried Vandal's masterpiece, the four degrees she surrendered during the blackout so the crew could breathe: every miracle in the building's history routes through Vat Hall if you follow it far enough upstream. Rule one — never run all seven at once — isn't about pressure ratings. Sprocket clicked it out plainly once for a new hire, and Threads translated: 'The other six are plumbing. Running SEVEN like plumbing is rude.'

So the offerings on her rim aren't superstition anymore, if they ever were. Fabric scraps, mostly — she likes the misprints best, the crew swears, the crooked and doubled and irregular ones, which tells you everything about whose factory this really is. Leave one at shift's end. You'll know it was received the way everyone knows:

The surface rolls over once, slow, in the deep dark of the hall. Not a wave. Not a bubble. An acknowledgment.

Seven never sleeps. But the crew long ago stopped finding that unsettling, and started finding it what it is — the same thing it's always been, since before the brand, before the name, before the walls:

Somebody's up, keeping watch, all night, every night. Sleep well.
